The iPhone 13 and 14 are pretty identical in terms of design and processors but there are notable differences in terms of some software and hardware upgrades. With the iPhone 13 now discounted, let’s look at whether it is worth it to make the upgrade to the iPhone 14.

Display

The new iPhone 14 and 13 have similar displays with Apple sticking to the 6.1-inch screen size and 60Hz refresh rate. The only disappointment here is that I expected the iPhone 14 to come with a higher refresh rate given some phones on the market are cheaper than it and have refresh rates as high as 120Hz. The iPhone 14 has an LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED screen with a resolution of 1179 x 2556 pixels and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 has a Super Retina XDR OLED screen with a resolution of 2532 x 1170 Pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9.

Design

Both the iPhone 14 and 13 have a 6.1-inch screen size with a refresh rate of 60Hz. They are both made of glass and aluminium with glossy backs, but the iPhone 14 has a ceramic shield on the front for added durability. The biggest difference in both phones in terms of design is that the iPhone 14 Plus is larger having a 6.7-inch screen.

Processor

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 use the Apple A15 Bionic chip, which is currently one of the best chips on the market. It comes with impressive graphical capacity and power management. The iPhone 14 Pro, however, comes with an Apple A16 Bionic chip, making it the first time that two iPhones under the same model range have different processors. The A15 Bionic chip is a very powerful processor but I expected an upgrade from the iPhone 13 given the price of the iPhone 14.

Memory

The iPhone 14 has 6GB of RAM, while the iPhone 13 has 4GB of RAM. This means that it should be able to handle more apps at once without slowing down or crashing than its predecessor can. The iPhone 14, iPhone 13 and iPhone Mini come in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options. The Pro and Pro Max versions of the iPhone 14 and 13 have a 1TB storage option.

Camera

The iPhone 14 and 13 feature two rear cameras (wide and ultra-wide angle cameras) with resolutions of 12MP on both lenses and in the same diagonal arrangement. Again, to my disappointment, I expected the iPhone 14 to come with a telephoto lens, given the price range. On a good note, though, the iPhone 14 has a larger sensor size paired with a faster f/1.5 aperture compared to the iPhone 13. The front-facing cameras on all iPhone 14 models come with autofocus. The iPhone 13 and 14 support 4K video shooting, but the iPhone 14 comes with gimbal-like stabilization when shooting video.

Battery

The iPhone 13 saw a huge upgrade in battery life compared to its predecessors. The iPhone 14, however, comes with a similar battery life like the 13. The iPhone 14 has a 3,279mAh battery compared to the iPhone 13’s 3,240mAh one.

Price

The iPhone 14 costs $799, while the iPhone 13 now costs $699. It should be noted that at the time of launch, the iPhone 13 cost $799. In the end, the iPhone 14 is more of a minor upgrade over the iPhone 13, one that will likely be able to satisfy most modern users without breaking the bank. The Pro and Plus versions are where Apple really steps it up, offering pro level power that could rival the iPhone 13. Either way you can’t really go wrong with any of the iPhone 13 or 14.
